Qué pasa? - What’s New?
Have you heard our KBBF local, weekly news program? It airs on Fridays from 11:30 am to noon in both Spanish and English; it then repeats at 4pm on Friday and again on Saturday and Sunday at 6pm. We are always looking for field reporters to help us cover various beats, including housing, labor, immigration, local politics, the environment and much more. We are hoping to expand our local news bureau and our team of reporters, producers and photographers in the next few months. If you’re interested in learning all about covering local news, send us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org. We are looking for people who are outgoing, bilingual and interested in social justice, journalism and communication. You can also call us at 707 545-8833 to learn more about this exciting local news project.
Family and Community
KBBF’s Día Del Niño: Happy family vibrations were brought to our community when KBBF celebrated El Dia del Niño this past Saturday (April 23rd). Attendees got to see children’s performances by Baile Folklorico Sarita, Vozes de Mexico, Windsor Bloco and, direct from Berkeley performing Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba, Quenepas! Día del Niño was celebrated in true childlike spirit with storytelling from Laura Casillas and many laughs shared among the many guests. The cute factor was off the charts. So many talented kids are part of our community! Another highlight was the children’s raffle. Congratulations to the grand prize winner of the Donald Trump Pinata. Felicidades!
Did you pick up your trash and bike to work this past Earth Day? Did you say hi to us at our KBBF table at Santa Rosa’s fabulous Earth Day event? Let’s keep caring for the planet all year long, after all, it is the only home we know. Sometimes we all forget to be appreciative of our beautiful Mother Earth. From all of us here at KBBF we thank you for your positive global efforts in making our planet thrive for many generations to come.
Call Your Mother!
Speaking of mothers, come out and bring your own mother to celebrate Mother’s Day with KBBF! On Saturday, May 21st from 5 to10 pm at 1700 Corby Avenue we will be celebrating mom with live Mariachi and delicious Mexican food and drink. We will have all the ingredients for a good time, beautiful flowers, mariachi music, fine wine and dancing. Many KBBF programmers will be in attendance, so come meet some of our great volunteers while supporting KBBF radio and taking your wonderful mom out for a good time.
Cinco de Mayo
Come by and visit the KBBF table at Roseland’s famous, family friendly, Cinco de Mayo celebration on Sebastopol Road on Thursday, May 5th. Introduce yourself to our General Manager Vylma Ortiz and other KBBF volunteers and supporters who are eager to meet and talk with you. We will have our big wheel of surprises and will also be raffling off another Donald Trump piñata! Lots of fun is planned for that day so we are looking forward to seeing you all there.
On-Air Fund Drive
KBBF, your listener sponsored, community radio, came on the air for the very first time in 1973 but the Bilingual Broadcasting Foundation was founded two years earlier, in 1971, by Chicano/Latino students from Sonoma State University. That makes 45 years of working to bring bilingual, community, radio to the North Bay. We have had our ups and downs but the future looks very bright for us right now. We are looking forward to the Foundation’s 45th birthday on Tuesday, May 31st. Join us as we celebrate its 45th birthday and ask you for your continued support of bilingual public radio. We are 100% listener supported, so why not help out and give to a cause well worth listening to? Lots of great thank you gifts will be offered during our fund drive so be sure to support the first, bilingual, public, radio station in the country, KBBF Radio 89.1 FM.
KBBF Board Meetings
They happen the last Saturday of the month and it's where you can learn even more about all the goings on at KBBF. Our next two meetings are April 30th and May 28th at 10:30 am. Come meet KBBF board president Alicia Sanchez and the rest of the board and learn how you can get involved in your local, bilingual, community radio station. The KBBF Board also has a show that is airing the first Sunday of every month at 5pm. The next one is scheduled to air on Sunday, May 1st. We also have volunteer orientation meetings scheduled for Saturday April 30th at 2pm and again on June 25th also at 2pm. Be warned, doughnuts and tamales may be brought.
Radioland appears monthly in the Sonoma County Gazette.
